Program Offered
The Transitions Mentoring Program provides pregnant or parenting teens with a chance to learn from the life experiences of a caring adult. Program objectives include reducing at-risk circumstances, including: school drop out, repeat pregnancies, and low birth weight. With the assistance of a mentor, Transitions aims to increase job opportunities, encourage high school or GED completion, and develop effective parenting skills.
Population Served
Teens, ages 13–18 years old, who are pregnant or parenting throughout Palm Beach County.
Mentor Responsibilities
Mentors with Transitions are matched to a single teen for one year. During that time mentors meet with their mentee once a week for a minimum of an hour. Each mentor devises a time suitable for his or her own schedule. When meeting with a teen, mentors offer friendship, support and encouragement for positive parenting. Telephone or emails between visits are encouraged.
Time Commitment
Mentors and mentees make a commitment to meet in person and maintain telephone contact weekly for one year.
